AEMO requires a comprehensive suite of power system studies to demonstrate that a BESS can operate safely, reliably, and securely within the NEM. We deliver all required modelling and analysis using validated PSCAD and PSS®E models, including:
1. SteadyState and Load Flow Analysis
Assessment of voltage levels, thermal loading, and network performance under normal and contingency conditions.
2. Fault Level and Protection Studies
Evaluation of shortcircuit contributions, protection coordination, and system strength impacts—critical for BESS projects in weakgrid areas.
3. Dynamic and Transient Stability Studies
Simulation of system disturbances to verify compliance with frequency, voltage, and stability requirements, including:
- Fault ridethrough (FRT)
- Primary Frequency Response
- FCAS for very fast and fast services
- Active and reactive power control
- System strength remediation
- Gridforming and gridfollowing behaviour (as applicable)
4. EMT (PSCAD) Modelling
Detailed electromagnetic transient studies to assess complex invertergrid interactions, harmonic performance, and system strength remediation needs.
5. Harmonic and Power Quality Assessments
Harmonic study in Power Factory to assess harmonic emissions at the Point of Connection for compliance with harmonic limits, flicker, and voltage fluctuation requirements under AS/NZS standards and NSP guidelines.
6. Control and Performance Validation
Tuning of PPC and inverter control systems, verification of plant behaviour, and compliance with GPS and AEMO’s model acceptance guidelines.
Hold Point Testing and Commissioning Support
We provide onsite and remote support during commissioning, including:
- Test plan development
- Provide high speed recorder for measurement accuracy aligned with AEMO expectations
- Provide high speed recorder to log data with measurement accuracy aligned with AEMO expectations
- On the spot realtime analysis of test results during Hold Point testing
- Preparation of Hold Point and R2 validation reports
Our team ensures that all testing is conducted with calibrated, NATA traceable equipment and that results meet AEMO’s evidence requirements for progressing through the hold point commissioning stages.
7. Generator Monitoring Program
We develop the Generator Monitoring Program for the on-going compliance to the GPS as per the AEMC template after the plant has reached commercial operation.
